DepEd: COVID-19 Mass Testing for Students and School Personnel is Costly

The Department of Education (DepEd) is studying the cost of COVID-19 mass testing to ensure the health and safety of students and school personnel as another school year opens.

Cost should be studied accordingly so that the department can identify the possible source of funds for the mass testing as we are still in the middle of the threat of the virus and the vaccine is still uncertain.

“The cost really has to be studied. How much is it? Can we afford it? Do we have a source [of funds]?” Education Undersecretary Revsee Escobedo said in an interview.

Mass testing would give relief and peace of mind of DepEd and parents as well, especially there is possible physical learning in schools.

Usec. Escobedo said that testing is costly for the repetition of tests as students and teachers go back and forth to their schools and to their homes.

“For example, you tested negative today. You will go back to your home and community. When you return, you will be tested again because you may not have acquired the virus in the school but in the home or community,” he said.
