MANILA, Philippines – Several local government units (LGUs) have announced the suspension of face-to-face classes on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, as extreme heat continues to affect different areas.

Extreme Heat Index Reaches “Danger” Level

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Metro Manila and other parts of the country may experience heat index levels of up to 46°C. This falls under the “danger” category, which can cause heat-related illnesses such as:

  • Heat cramps
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Heat stroke (in severe cases)

Due to these risks, some LGUs have implemented automatic class suspensions when the heat index reaches 42°C or higher.

LGUs That Announced Class Suspensions

Metro Manila

Marikina City

  • Based on Executive Order No. 05, series of 2025, all face-to-face classes at all levels in public and private schools are automatically suspended when the heat index reaches 42°C or higher.
  • Schools are required to shift to distance learning, using synchronous or asynchronous methods.

Valenzuela City

  • Under City Ordinance No. 1175, Series of 2024, in-person classes are suspended when the heat index reaches 42°C and above.
  • Schools must transition to online synchronous or asynchronous learning.

PAGASA Heat Index Forecast for Tuesday, March 4, 2025

PAGASA has predicted that at least one synoptic station will experience “danger” level heat index on Tuesday:

Authorities advise residents to limit outdoor activities, drink plenty of water, and stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Recent Class Suspensions Due to Heat Index

On Monday, March 3, 2025, some LGUs in Metro Manila and Pampanga also suspended face-to-face classes due to dangerous heat index levels.

What to Do During Extreme Heat?

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Wear light and loose clothing.
  • Avoid going outdoors during peak heat hours (10 AM – 4 PM).
  • Use fans, air conditioning, or stay in shaded areas to keep cool.
  • Be aware of symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
