Gospel: John 6:1-15

1 Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee.

2 A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick.

3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.

4 The Jewish feast of Passover was near.

5 When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?”

6 He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do.

7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little.”

8 One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,

9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?”

10 Jesus said, “Have the people recline.” Now there was a great deal of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number.

11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted.

12 When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.”

13 So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat.

14 When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, “This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.”

15 Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone.

Reflection:

The gospel of today is from John 6:1-15 and we will dig deep as this gospel teaches us about a great miracle. I always can compare the gospel today with a song from Corrine May entitled “Five Loaves and Two Fishes“. This is the exact message of the gospel from John 6:1-15 when Jesus performed a miracle for His people. Let us take a rewind back to where the gospel leads us.

When Jesus went across to the Sea of Galilee, there a large crowd of people followed Him. It is obvious that these people followed to listen to His teachings and others are curious may be. Regardless of the reasons, Jesus still worry that these people might be hungry. It is in this reason that He perform a great miracle fort them. Making use of a boy carrying five loaves of bread and two fishes, Jesus distributed it to the people. The miracle is that the food is enough for everyone. At the end, everyone is full and there was plenty of food that they carry the left overs so not to waste it.

The miracle form the gospel of John 6:1-15 is always true to us even now that we are in the phase of pandemic. Jesus performs miracles for us everyday in our lives even if don’t see it. Sometimes, we only need to call His name to ask for these miracles and He will listen to us. This is a reminder of His great love for us. Sinners as we are, if we learn to ask for forgiveness from Him, He will always be there. Each problem that we have is actually not a problem if we have faith in Him. If you have big problems, talk to Him and ask Him for a miracle.

“Take my five loaves and two fishes, do with it as You will, I surrender. Take my fears, my inhibitions all my burdens my ambitions, You can use it all, to feed them all.” Lord we trust in You. – Clea | Helpline PH
