Superb: One-range salary increase for teachers upon retirement
A one-range salary increase for public school teachers is very important, especially if they have already left the profession. The retired teachers rely only on what they receive from the GSIS. An increase in compensation upon retirement is a teacher’s request to fully enjoy the GSIS retirement.
Although this one-range salary increase upon teachers’ retirement will not be enough to cover their regular check-ups, medications, and maintenance, the teachers are still hoping to enjoy this one-range salary increase. The elderly are already sick and in need of money to meet their needs. Therefore, teachers are urging the government and the GSIS to enhance teacher pay or implement the Magna Carta for Public School Teachers.
When public school teachers retire, they will receive a one-range salary increase, which will be used to calculate their retirement compensation. Section 26 of Republic Act No. 4670, dubbed “The Magna Carta for Public School Teachers,” states:
Section 26: Increase in salary upon retirement. Public school teachers having fulfilled the age and service requirements of the applicable retirement laws shall be given a one-year salary range raise upon retirement, which shall be the basis of the computation of the lump sum of the retirement pay and the monthly benefits thereafter.
Followed by the DepEd Order No. 48, s. 1997 or the Guidelines in the implementation of the benefits arising from a one (1) salary grade increase for retiring public school teachers pursuant to RA 4670. This is the most awaited moment by the public school teachers, that they will be given one (1) salary grade increase upon retirement.
Teachers will benefit greatly from the one-range salary increase upon retirement, especially in this time of the pandemic, when everything is rising in price. Medicines are also costly; even the elderly can avail themselves of a senior citizen discount, but it is still costly for them. The price increase affects a large number of people who are jobless and have low-wage salaries. This R.A. should be implemented to assist retiring teachers in enjoying their remaining time on this earth.
The GSIS may benefit from the one-range salary increase upon retirement as well because if the retired teachers died, their monthly pension would cease and be returned to GSIS savings. Therefore, this one-range increase should be implemented immediately upon the teachers’ retirement. – Doki | Helpline PH
