In Zamboanga City, Representative Khymer Adan Olaso has taken a big step. He has asked the Committee on Basic Education and Culture to make the dominant mother tongue language a regular part of the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum.
Rep. Olaso, in his House Resolution Number 1933, believes that including the dominant mother tongue language regularly in SHS will not just keep regional languages strong but also help students communicate better. This change can lead to more cultural sharing and help students do well in school.
Right now, the main local language of an area isn’t a core part of the SHS curriculum. This makes it hard to keep growing and saving regional languages among older students.
Rep. Olaso feels that it’s important to celebrate language differences and help students understand and love their main local language more. This effort can also help save the cultural identity, heritage, and history of the area.
By making the dominant mother tongue language a regular subject in SHS, it will give students a deeper connection to their roots and a better grasp of their local language, which is key for their future learning and communication.
