DepEd Seeks World Bank’s Help for Teachers’ Salary Increase

The Department of Education (DepEd) of the Philippines has sought assistance from the World Bank to study a proposed salary increase for public school teachers. During a surprise interview at MalacaƱang, DepEd Undersecretary and Spokesperson Michael Poa revealed that they had a meeting with the World Bank last week.

The World Bank has already conducted a preliminary review of the proposal, but further study is needed. Specifically, DepEd wants the World Bank to examine whether it is possible to make annual salary increases for teachers to keep up with inflation.

Undersecretary Poa mentioned that the World Bank is expected to deliver the final report in the coming weeks. Once received, DepEd will use this report as a guide for the next budget hearing. This step is part of ongoing efforts to improve conditions for teachers and ensure their salaries reflect the rising cost of living.
