Top 5 realizations of a teacher looking at elderly pensioners at GSIS

A few days ago, I saw several elderly pensioners at GSIS doing some personal appointments. As I have also some important follow up inquiries at GSIS, I can’t help to think about these elderly people. Mix emotions flooded my entire system while I see myself in their shoes many years from now.

These elderly pensioners are for sure in their late 60’s. Some of them were having a hard time walking by themselves. I was curious and couldn’t help but ask one of the guide (chaperon) of an elderly lady with a mild stroke. She had difficulty in walking and moving but she still insisted on doing the writing on a certain paper. I ask the guide if she was the daughter of the said elderly but to my astonishment, she was only a neighbor. She said that the elderly has many children but none of them are helping their elderly mom. The old pensioner was trying to avail of a loan out of her pension from GSIS because she needs to buy her medicines.

The conversation alone was shocking that I view myself as an elderly in the future. I then realized so many things while waiting for my queue number at GSIS.

1. ENJOY WORK BUT DON’T OVERDO IT.

I am a teacher at present, and I don’t want to reach the level where I am very pitiful and sickly. I realized that retiring at an early age may not be very bad at all as I can enjoy more with my family. After all, what good will money do me if I can no longer walk?

2. A GOOD HEART WILL ALWAYS RETURN THE FAVOR NO MATTER WHAT THE SITUATIONS MAY BE.

It doesn’t matter if you have children or none. If you are good enough, for surer many will guide you when you can no longer walk. I have many that have many children but none of them escorted their elderly pensioners. Having children and them being good to their elderly parents is a plus.

3. ALWAYS MAKE TIME TO FOLLOW-UP YOUR LOANS AT GSIS TO MAKE YOUR RETIREMENT FLOW SMOOTHLY.

As early as now, I should not take my loans at GSIS for granted as it may hinder me from enjoying my retirement benefits. Always take time to follow-up your GSIS account.

4. RETIRE AT A VERY GOOD TIMING.

I realized that I should not wait to become 60 to retire. An early retirement will do. Life is too short and only the heavens knows when we will vanish. So, retire at a very good timing.

5. BE WISER IN SPENDING YOUR RETIREMENT MONEY.

Understand that when you retire, you are no longer receiving a salary. Spend your retirement money on a wise version.

All these I realized during my 3 hours waiting for my queue number at GSIS. We all will become elderly soon, and we don’t know if we will reach retirement. The only thing we must hold is try to be positive in all ways. Be positive that we could get to have ample amount of time to spend with our family and loved ones. – Clea | Helpline PH
