Gospel: Mark 6:1-6
1 Leaving that district, he went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him.
2 With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them were astonished when they heard him. They said, ‘Where did the man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been granted him, and these miracles that are worked through him?
3 This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? His sisters, too, are they not here with us?’ And they would not accept him.
4 And Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and in his own house’;
5 and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands on them.
6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. He made a tour round the villages, teaching.
Reflection:
Our gospel for today if from Mark 6:1-6 and this tells us the about Jesus going back to His hometown to teach. It is in the gospel that Jesus went touring the place teaching in the synagogue. The people there of course know Him as the carpenter, the son of Mary but it is clear that they have lack of faith. They tried to ask so many questions about Him being so good in preaching and having wisdom. The people showed their amazement but deep inside they lack faith.
This gospel in Mark 6:1-6 is a reminder that we have something in common with the people around Jesus. As you can see, they are so close with Jesus yet they despise Him and they doubted Him. They are His close relatives in His hometown yet they lack faith in Him. We are not an exception to them. We know that Jesus is close to us yet we still chose to sin again and again. Human as we are, we are bound to commit mistakes but too much of it is already an exaggeration. This might as well reveals our truest form. Sinner mortals, we are bound to carry the sins of our first parents Adam and Eve. Even though we are sinners, we had the chance to fix everything when Jesus died on the cross to save us.
Mark 6:1-6 is a reminder that our lack of faith will be the toll that will bring us down. If we lack faith in Him, our days will be hard and all will not be easy. Faith is to believe in what we do not see. Modern people as we are do not see Jesus in His physical form but we can feel His presence. We can feel His power and His graces abound us all. It is already up to us to decide our fate if we put our faith in Him.
These days, when the pandemic is still around, we need every inch of faith to Him. We need Him to restore our lives. Lord Jesus, we may not be good children as You hoped but we humble ask you to never give up on us. Bless your people that we may unite as one in your church. – Clea | Helpline PH
