Leonor Briones, Ex-DepEd Head, Gets Top Educator Award

Dr. Leonor Briones, a distinguished figure in the field of education in the Philippines, has recently been honored with the ACSCU Outstanding Educator Award. This prestigious accolade was presented to her during the 61st ACSCU National Convention, a significant event that brings together the Association of Christian Schools, Colleges, and Universities.

Dr. Briones, a former Secretary of Education and current director of the Innotech Center, has made a profound impact on the education system in the country. Her extensive experience and innovative initiatives have left an indelible mark on the landscape of Philippine education. She is particularly recognized for her role in instituting landmark initiatives such as the Last Miles Schools program, DepEd TV, and the revitalization of Alternative Learning Systems (ALS).

In addition to her role in public service, Dr. Briones has also made significant contributions to academia. She has served as a professor at the University of the Philippines National College of Public Administration and Governance (UP-NCPAG), vice president for administration and finance of the University of the Philippines System, and a member of the board of trustees of Silliman University. Currently, she holds the esteemed title of professor emeritus at UP-NCPAG.

The ACSCU Outstanding Educator Award is a testament to Dr. Briones’ selfless and exemplary contributions to the education system. It is a recognition of her tireless efforts and commitment to improving the quality of education in the Philippines. This award also marks the first time that ACSCU has presented this honor, with Dr. Briones being one of the inaugural awardees alongside National Scientist and former Silliman University president Dr. Angel Alcala (posthumous).
