Today’s Gospel Reflection: John 1:29-34

John 1:29-34

Gospel: John 1:29-34

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

John 1:29-34

Reflection:

Today’s gospel is from John 1:29-34 which is about Jesus as the Lamb of God. There are actually three words I’d like to point out today. The three words are lamb, dove, and baptize. John the Baptist uttered these words as the symbol of hope for the people.

So let us one by one dig deep these three words from the gospel of John 1:29-34. Lamb is the term used by John to describe Jesus. The lamb of God who will take away the sins of the people. In the olden times, lambs are always used for sacrificial events. Lambs are meek and will never complain. Jesus is the sacrificial lamb that became man through Mary so that we can all be free of sin.

In John 1:29-34, the dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. It is clear that John the Baptist saw the dove in the sky as he baptized Jesus. It meant so much because the holy spirit is a great proof the Son of God became man to save mankind.

The third symbol from the gospel of John 1:29-34 is baptize. John the Baptist baptized Jesus but he knew from the start that Jesus is the Savior we have been waiting. All these time John ad Jesus are cousins yet they were very meek and humble. John the Baptist even humbled himself in front of Jesus. The baptism of Jesus is the very important thing John did.

“This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world”. This word from John the Baptist is an assurance to the people that there is deliverance. Jesus is the Lamb of God, the Son of God who dies on the cross as a sacrifice for the sins of the people. Let us then try to do penance and offer ourselves in honor to Jesus. – Clea | Helpline PH
