National Achievement Test for Grade 10: A Comprehensive Overview

The Department of Education (DepEd) in the Republic of the Philippines has recently issued a memorandum, announcing the administration of the National Achievement Test for Grade 10 (NATG10) for the School Year (SY) 2022-2023. This test, scheduled for June 27, 2023, is a significant event in the academic calendar, and it has implications for students, educators, and the broader education system.

Understanding the National Achievement Test

The National Achievement Test is a standardized examination administered to Grade 10 learners in all regional offices, schools division offices, and schools offering the Grade 10 curriculum in both public and private schools. The test is designed to assess whether Grade 10 learners are meeting the learning standards of the Junior High School curriculum.

The NATG10 is one of the exit assessments under the national assessment framework of the K to 12 Basic Education Program. It’s a tool designed to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of the delivery of education services. The results of these assessments serve as evidence for the improvement of curriculum implementation.

The Scope of the Test

The test covers 21st Century Skills, including Problem Solving, Information Literacy, and Critical Thinking, using learning areas in English, Mathematics, Science, Filipino, and Araling Panlipunan as content. The test design is progressive in nature, with test items measuring varying levels of skills in a multiple-choice format using English and Filipino language.

The Bureau of Education Assessment (BEA) manages the national implementation of the NATG10 with the assistance of the regional offices and schools division offices. The BEA coordinates with the identified field-testing personnel for the conduct of the national conference and administration of the NATG10.

Preparing for the Test

The guidelines on the test administration, including the roles and responsibilities of the field-testing personnel and the downloading of the Program Support Funds (PSF) to schools division offices, are discussed in a virtual orientation. This orientation was held on June 7, 2023, and the link was sent to the regional testing coordinators, division testing coordinators, and private school supervisors through an advisory.

The sampling procedure in selecting Grade 10 learners per school was also discussed during the virtual orientation. It’s important to note that health and safety protocols must be followed in all activities related to the national test administration.
