Sample Teaching Guides and ClassPrograms for Catch-Up Fridays

The Department of Education (DepEd) is unwavering in its dedication to providing quality and inclusive basic education in the Philippines. This commitment is in line with the government’s Eight-Point Socioeconomic Agenda and the MATATAG Education Agenda, which aims to produce competent, job-ready, and responsible citizens equipped with essential skills for lifelong learning.

To strengthen the goals of the MATATAG Agenda and accelerate progress as outlined in DepEd Order (DO) No. 013, s. 2023, which adopts the National Learning Recovery Program (NLRP), there is a crucial need to emphasize Values, Health, and Peace Education. Values Education is a top priority, complying with Republic Act (RA) No. 11476, also known as the Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) and Values Education Act, recognizing the youth’s vital role in nation-building. Peace Education is equally vital, addressing the issue of bullying in public schools and preparing Filipino learners to be global citizens and advocates of peace. Additionally, Health Education is essential to ensure the overall well-being of students.

To address these concerns, DepEd is introducing Catch-Up Fridays, starting from January 12, 2024, in elementary and secondary schools as well as community learning centers (CLCs) nationwide. Every Friday of January 2024 will be dedicated to the “Drop Everything and Read” (DEAR) activity and an orientation for field officials. These Fridays will also serve as a platform to gather valuable feedback from field implementers about the Catch-Up Fridays’ guidelines.

Throughout the school year, all Fridays will be designated as Catch-Up Fridays. The focus will be on implementing the National Reading Program (NRP) during the first half of the day’s schedule and emphasizing Values, Health, and Peace Education during the second half.
