Reasons why it’s hard for public school teachers to fail a student
Today’s trend in education is way different than that of the traditional model we experienced 20 years ago. Recently, we practiced mass promotion in our different schools and tried our very best not to retain a student. This means we catered different modalities in order to fill up the needs of the learners who were candidates for retention or even failure.
For today’s article, I will be talking about why is it hard for us public school teachers to literally fail our students so that you will also be enlightened even a little on what we really are doing to help our learners.
Here are the reasons why teachers in public schools find it hard to fail a struggling student:
1. Mass Promotion
There are four (4) typical types of students in a classroom setting namely the achievers (intelligent), the moderate brainy (moderately intelligent), the slow learners (but skillful), and the difficult students (slow and very difficult to handle). The last one is the one we teachers are trying to look into since most of these students came from broken families and they only come to class depending on their mood. Some of them only report during quarterly exams. In this case, it is very hard for the teacher to find ways and means to cater to his/her needs in order for this student not to actually fail. Before we actually decide a certain student to be retained, we will still make all efforts to give these kinds of students remedial classes and activities. In short, if a student can still be helped in any way we can then we do it just not to fail him her.
2. Student Background
Teachers also check the background of a certain student the reason for his/her absenteeism in the class and find ways to deal with the student to still do the necessary lessons even in a remedial class session just to fill-up the lacking lessons needed. Sometimes modules are even offered just to make sure the student will not fail.
3. Teacher Factor
Even if you try to flip the board side to side, still it is considered a lack of the teacher’s part if there is a failure in class. This is what we call as teacher factor. Considering that if there are more failures means the teacher also failed on his/her part of giving education to the student. It means that a teacher should really see to it that difficult students still learn no matter what which means more struggles for the teacher.
Our recent education is more student-based and only sees the needs of the students. After all, students are the blood that flows in the veins of instruction which is seemingly the most important thing in the body of education. Since learning is not only contained in the four walls of a classroom then I think this is why we teachers must be the bringer of opportunity for the young generations. – Clea | Helpline PH
