Teachers request for additional ‘internet allowance’ from DepEd
The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) said that the additional allowance intended for the internet should be provided by DepEd aside from the 3,500 chalk/cash allowance that is intended for teaching materials.
TDC requested at least a P1000-internet allowance per month.
“With this drastic change in teaching and learning approaches, our teachers will need to upgrade their technological capacity and digital access,” Ildefonso Enguerra III, a teacher in Roxas High School, Manila, and the President of TDC-NCR Teachers’ Union (TDC-NCRTU) said.
“The DepEd may consider the provision of gadgets like laptop computers or tablets and internet access to our teachers,” he added.
Deped 3,500 cash allowance is expected to be released on June 15. According to Enguerra, this cash allowance will provide teachers 16.00 pesos budget in a day for teaching materials and the internet. He said further that teachers will need more funds as we will deeply rely on the usage of the internet.
“Our experience in the first week of enrolment alone- where we were tasked to enlist the children online through social media, text messages and calls – shows that we will need more assistance to deliver the expected output of distance education,” he explained.
