746 DepEd personnel, students tested positive for COVID-19

More than 700 DepEd employees and students tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19), according to the report released by DepEd on Monday (August 24, 2020).

Based on DepEd report, 264 students, 311 teachers and 168 non-teaching personnel acquired the deadly virus.

“[A] total of 748 DepEd personnel (including the Central Office) and learners have been confirmed to be COVID-19 positive,” DepEd Undersecretary Alain Pascua said in a memo.

“[Over] 318 remain active cases, 408 have recovered and 22 have died,” he added.

DepEd supposed to open the classes today (August 24, 2020) but President Rodrigo Duterte rescheduled on October 5 as DepEd still in preparation of printing modules for distance learning.

Despite the risk, DepEd explained that the department has Task Force COVID-19 Memorandum 68 that guides the bureau, services and units of central office to detect, report, refer any COVID-19 related cases and close contacts.

Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) expressed concerns towards the opening of classes amid the pandemic.
