Lugas Student Publication of Cantilan National High School garnered 6 awards in the 2020 Campus Press Awards organized by The Manila Times and The Manila Times College.
Pemuel Prado’s editorial article was hailed as the Best Editorial Story in Filipino. Meanwhile, the column article of Shania Anino was recognized as the Best Column Story in Filipino. Also, Lugas won four 2nd runner-up awards, namely Best Sports Story (Filipino) of Triskel Ello, Best Editorial Cartoon (Filipino) of Jerson Guerta, Best Layout and Page Design, and Best News Website.
The Editor-in-chief of Lugas can’t believe that their entries grabbed major awards in the prestigious event.
“I didn’t expect that the judges will choose our entries. 400 plus yung official entries kaya pahirapan talaga ang labanan.” Pemuel Prado said.
It was the first time that the said student publication won journalism awards in the national level.
“Ito po ang kauna-unahang awards that Lugas received from The Manila Times and The Manila Times College,” Prado uttered.
“Before these national awards, the only highest recognition that the publication received was the 8th place in Best Editorial Section during the Awarding Ceremony for the Best School Paper in Caraga Region,” he added.
When asked about the things that pushed the publication to join the competition, Prado mentioned that upgrading Lugas’ participation to pro-journalism events became their main goal.
“I told our school paper adviser that it’s time to level up the engagement of our publication to pro-journalism events (both DepEd and non-DepEd competitions) that really promotes the empowerment of campus journalism,” Prado stated. “To add, let’s make Lugas a well-known publication in the Philippines.”
The Virtual Awarding Ceremony will happen on January 29, 2021 via The Manila Times Facebook page and The Manila Times TV.
